Esther 4
God is Sovereign

God is Sovereign

Have you ever pondered the fact that God is sovereign? Maybe you have heard the word sovereign used to describe God, but would you be able to explain what that means if someone asked you?

The Lexham Theological Wordbook explains sovereignty: "Divine sovereignty refers to God's all-encompassing rule over the entire universe."

Knowing God is in complete control is comforting, especially when you believe the teaching of the Scriptures about the fact that He is gracious, compassionate, merciful and slow to anger. But, when you think about God's sovereignty, does it bring up any questions about the presence of sin and evil in the world? Many have asked, 'If God is all-powerful and all-good, then why does He allow evil and suffering?' Even within the pages of the Bible, some of those who experienced God most intimately have wrestled with this question.

I encourage you to take some time and prayerfully ponder God's sovereignty this weekend. As you ponder, read Esther chapter 4, our main text, this coming Sunday. If you have time and want to do a deeper dive, read the whole book of Esther. It is one of the most fascinating, ironic books in the entire Bible.

The book of Esther is the only book of the Bible that does not mention God once. But it is impossible to read the book of Esther and not see God at work. His sovereignty is all over the place. The book of Esther is a good parallel for us today in the 21st century. Many people do not believe in God; they do not see His sovereign hand at work behind the scenes of world events, but for those who know God, you can't unsee Him. One day, He will reveal how He has been at work throughout human history and in our personal lives. May we learn to recognize His work and hear His voice today.

I look forward to gathering with you on Sunday to worship our Lord.

Pastor Nathan.
